What is Cataract?
Cataracts, age related or otherwise, forms the bulk of the surgical workload at any ophthalmologist. Management of cataract is completely and solely surgical. It cannot be cured by medicines or glasses or eye drops. At Eyeris Eye Care, we will guide you to take the most prudent decisions regarding your cataract and help you attain the maximum possible visual outcome. Understand that age related cataract is not a disease but a part of the normal aging process. In most cases, complete visual recovery after surgery is the rule.
Causes of Cataract
Mostly it is an age related and genetics related process. The cataract formation may be accelerated with some drugs that you have been taking for your systemic condition. Diabetics and hypertensives tend to get cataracts earlier. People exposed to UV rays and high temperature surroundings also tend to get cataract earlier. Genetics play a major role too. Trauma to the eye and eye surgeries are also risk factors for cataract.
Treatment of Cataract
Cataract is treated by surgery. The basic principle is to remove the clouded natural lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens. This can be undertaken by three basic types of cataract surgeries, namely ECCE, SICS and Phacoemulsification. ECCE is one of the older techniques which does not rely on any machinery and is done manually. It also requires stitches. Phacoemulsification is the international standard in cataract surgery which is done by a machine through a small 2.8mm incision. There are no stitches in this surgery. SICS is a manual variety of phacoemulsification.
Timing of Surgery
The days when we used to wait for the cataract to mature are long gone. The decision to operate before the cataract matures is entirely taken by the patient with the guidance of the doctor. The timing of the surgery depends on the day to day activities of the patient. An active individual who drive by himself will benefit from an early surgery. An elderly patient might want to take more time to get operated. The choice rests with the patient. However, remember that earlier surgery has shorter recovery time.
Choice of Lenses
One of the most crucial factor which decides the cost of surgery is the type of lens implanted. The choice varies from rigid lenses to foldable ones. There are choices between hydrophobic and hydrophilic lenses. There are many varieties of monofocal, multifocal and trifocal lenses available in the market, the latest addition being EDoF lenses. We also have toric lenses. Furthermore, the make (read ‘brand’) of lenses also have a huge impact on cost and quality. Think about the lens choices like the options while you buy a car, the difference being this is a once in a lifetime choice.
